Introduction to Nautica 2017

Media and Entertainment industry  is going through a rapid disruption all over the world. A lot of smaller players are challenging the status quo by leveraging new technologies and business models. Now, let us understand the value chain of media industry that will help us in making decision in future rounds.


Content Producers

These are content makers such as television producers, film studios, and news houses and agencies. They create original content and participate in its production. They make money by selling rights to this content to aggregators.

Aggregators

They are cable networks that buy rights of content produced by third parties. The networks pack up the acquired content into programming services often called channels for scheduled transmission. Networks usually enter into long duration contracts with distributors who pay a predetermined fee to the networks for channel bundles. They also make money through advertisements aired during the channel broadcast.

Distributors

Distributors provide the infrastructure through which media content reaches consumers. In television, distributors include cable, satellite TV operators and over the top (OTT, i.e. via internet) service providers. They sell bundled channels to consumers for a monthly subscription fee.

You are a team of three people newly appointed as CTO, CFO and marketing head of ABC Entertainment Ltd. Your company is  vertically integrated and operates across the value chain, i.e, it acts as a content producer, aggregator and distributor. You are looking at new geographies for possible expansion.You have narrowed down to the country of Narnia whose media and entertainment industry is still in a very nascent stage. You have been asked by the CEO of ABC Entertainment Ltd to prepare a 10 year plan for Narnia market. However, you will be competing with about 300 other companies who have decided to enter the Narnia market.

The game would be played over three rounds starting at 3:00 PM today( Nov 10, 2017) .

You have studied the media and entertainment industry of  Narnia and identified that you can enter into content distribution through Cable (like Hathway ) and Direct-to-Home( like TataSky). To enter into content distribution, one needs to invest in infrastructure and technology ( like installing towers, laying down cables, satellite transponders to broadcast DTH signals). The amount invested will determine your coverage area and that in turn will determine the maximum number of customers that you can serve.
